caqu Vintage Redline Denim – low-carbon and environmentally friendly

caqu – Japanese high-fashion vintage redline denim, has been developed by famous Japanese designers (previously spent 11 years as the designer and production director for the internationally renowned denim brand EDWIN) and Kogure Yasuhiro (15 years as production director for Levi’s for 15 years).

caqu is an advocate for socially responsible, low-carbon products and fashion. They use carefully selected fabrics, design, cuts, tailoring and exquisite craftsmanship that is all based on sustainable manufacturing techniques.

The cotton used for the denim is sourced from Burkino Faso, West Africa. Burkino Faso is a small country with a pristine environment and long history of cotton production. As it is a developing country with poor medical facilities and resources, caqu donates 500 yen for each pair of jeans sold to the country’s medical institutions.

The denim from caqu’s vintage redline range is produced from rare 19 century denim looms that are rarely used nowadays (redline is the edge of fabric that is produced by the antique looms in the weaving process). The looms are completely manually operated and production is limited to 10 pairs per day. Further considering environmental protection and the scarcity and difficulty in producing these superior quality fabrics, there is no waste in the production of the jeans. The craftsmen use all the off-cuts to make the small pockets, belt loops etc.

caqu’s philosophy of environmental protection is reflected not only the choice of raw materials, design and manual production process, but also in its dying method. All of the denim is dyed using plant dyes creating a color that looks more natural and difficult to fade once they have been hand-brushed and hand-polished to create a distressed look. The longer you wear your caqu jeans the more natural accents and features the jeans will have creating an individual look for each wearer.

caqu has been referred to as “the Hermes of jeans ” and is also known as heavy denim due to its natural fabrics and unique traditional weaving method.

By producing such a high quality, timeless and sustainable piece of clothing the brand caqu does not only produce a stylish designer product but also a product that is friendly to our environment.

caqu Devotes Itself to Public Welfare

The designer of caqu, Tsurumaru Naoki, is not only passionate about the craftsmanship of denim but is also devoted to other philanthropic projects. Not long ago, caqu brand began cooperating with a company in Burkina Faso (Africa) and released five denim collections representing the friendship between the two countries. The collaboration received strong support from the ambassador of Burkina Faso. The jeans are made of the raw cotton from the African nation, which is of equal high quality as that from Zimbabwe but at a lower price. caqu will donate 500 yen from every pair of jeans sold to support the projects in the developing country, including building schools, providing medical equipment and basic essentials for African refugees.
